getting support
Brain Tumour SupportThis area is of great importance to the patients, carers and supporters of Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire.

If you think that it might help to talk to someone who has an appreciation of what you are going through, please contact Carol Robertson and she will put you in touch with a person in a similar situation.

We have a number of patients and carers who are willing to talk either by telephone, email or face to face (where possible) to help you through the dark times.
how should I feel?
When you or a family member receive a brain tumour diagnosis, everyone close will be affected in some way, each person will have a different way of coping and dealing with the practical and emotional issues they face. It is perfectly normal to feel sad, angry, depressed, in denial or some other emotion, remember that there is no right or wrong way to feel.

One lady who is involved with Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire was able to express her feelings through writing. She wanted to share her work and we are delighted to publish it via the link below.

This is a very powerful and emotional piece of work, written at a low period in her journey with this disease. Janet wants you to know that she now feels differently and more positively about life and the way she is managing the condition.

She would like to share her feelings and emotions and hopes that this account may help others to understand a little more about how this disease can affect a patient. Read Janet's Story.
attend our support group
Brain Tumour Support Group

This is a group that meets from 6.30 to 8.30 on the first Tuesday of each month.

The group currently meets at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Wellington Street, Leeds LS1 4DL, but please ring Carol on 01943 870770 to confirm the meeting place as we sometimes change and will have supper in a local restaurant.

Speakers from different areas of care including reiki, aromatherapy and massage through to practical speakers from Social Services, Job Centre and insurance companies come along to the meetings to provide practical information for patients and carers.

It is also a good place for carers and patients to simply meet others who are facing similar experiences.

Social events are organised each year – including a summer BBQ and a Christmas meal both of which are funded by Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire.

If you would like more information, please contact Carol via email or telephone (01943 870770) at Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire. If you know of any other support groups in the Yorkshire region and would like to add your group on this page then please contact Carol and we may be able to add your details to this page.

useful links and other charities
Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire works in collaboration with many other charities in the UK. A close link has developed with Ellie's Fund Brain Tumour Trust in Scarborough to provide a more seamless approach to support across Yorkshire and the Humber region. In addition we work with Levi's Star and The PPR Foundation as four brain tumour charities in Yorkshire. In addition, Sheffield based Sophie's Wish is a fund set up under Brain Tumour Research. We all share a common goal - support the work undertaken by the scientist at the brain tumour research lab in Leeds and care for patients and their families as they work their way through this devastating disease.

Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire is proud to work with 18 other UK brain tumour charities under the banner Brain Tumour Research. The charities collaborate and work together to improve the general standard of care for all brain tumour patients and support the ethos of sharing information and resources.

We also work with the International Brain Tumour Alliance, sharing information and support across the world.

An important and useful website has been created for high grade brain tumour patients. Please visit Brain Tumour Buddies it is a free resource and contains a forum, links and tons of relevant information.

A full list of the member charities we work with can be found at Charity Network.
financial grants
From time to time BTRS is able to award brain tumour patients with a small financial grant (£200 maximum). Please follow the link to the Status Grant Form to see if you qualify. All applications are subject to the BTRS’ Board of Trustees' agreement and their decision is final and not open for debate.

Please note that BTRS does not fund family subsistence costs for patients travelling abroad for treatment for a brain or spinal cord tumour.  This applies both to treatment that is approved and funded by the NHS, such as proton therapy for specific indications, together with any non-NHS funded self referrals.
