About us

We are Brain Tumour Research and Support Across Yorkshire, more commonly known as BTRS.

BTRS is Yorkshire's leading brain tumour charity dedicated to raising funds for life changing research and patient support.

Formerly known as Andrea's Gift, read about the origins of BTRS.

Our vision

Our vision is clear and simple, to cure a devastating disease that affects so many people. Whilst we are working to find a cure, we will provide the best patient and family support network we can.

Why we are here

Around 9,000 new cases of primary brain tumours are diagnosed in the UK every year, 12 each week in Yorkshire. Whilst we are working to find a cure, we will provide the best patient and family support network we can.

We want to make this number smaller, and make life easier for those who are affected, by:

  • Raising significant funds to support dedicated research projects into treating and curing child and adult brain tumours and sharing our findings with other charities.
  • Giving grants and financial assistance to brain tumour patients and their carers.
  • Arranging for hospital wards, patients and research centres to be provided with all the equipment they need.
  • Supporting patients and their loved ones through providing practical advice (our benefits clinic), running support groups, offering counselling and a range of other holistic therapies.

The BTRS team

Our team is made up of two groups of passionate and enthusiastic people; our dedicated trustees and our devoted office staff.

Our trustees

We are governed by a team of trustees, a number of business professionals whose job it is to lead and guide our future. Our trustees are informed by accomplished medical experts who work with brain tumour patients every day.

Our trustees are:

  • Martin Gatenby is our Chair and Key Account Manager. He works for a leading pharmaceutical company
  • Bev Foster is Regional Sales Operations Manager for Emerald Group Publishing.
  • Mr Paul Chumas is a Consultant Neurosurgeon. He co-founded BTRS and has been instrumental to our growth.
  • Dr Susan Picton is a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist based at St James University Teaching Hospital in Leeds.
  • Mr Rob Corns is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Leeds General Infirmary.
  • Tim Calverley is a Director of Business Advisory Service Laurus, based in Leeds.
  • Dr Ruth Clarke is retired from a Scientific career and a keen volunteer in our BTRS Charity Shop. She represents the patient voice on our board.

Our friendly office staff

The team based at No. 31 are led by our Charity Manager, Marie Peacock. Marie is dedicated to providing support for families across the region, as well as funding research to find a cure for this devastating disease. Christine Beal, our Support Services Co-ordinator, is always on-hand to give words of encouragement, help and support to brain tumour patients and their families. Nicki Hood can be found frantically organising all our fantastic fundraising events as our Community Fundraiser.

In 2016 BTRS opened a cafe and charity shop at No 31, Otley Road, Leeds. The shop is run by Becky Bulmer and Sammy Bryant-Kitching who are always happy to welcome you.
