Ackworth School

Ackworth School's amazing fundraising

Wed 18 June

Ackworth Primary School have raised an amazing £1,316.56 in support of pupil Caitlin Peaker.
When Pontefract based, Caitlin Peaker, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in just year 1 of primary school,  her world became a very different place.  Following years of treatment, Caitlin is now on the road to recovery.

Now in her final year at  Ackworth School, the teachers wanted to raise money for a charity that was close to all of their hearts and decided to get the whole school involved to raise money for BTRS who have supported Caitlin and her family during a very difficult time.

Teacher and head of the school council, Katie Station said "We chose to raise money for BTRS as it is a cause very close to our hearts. Caitlin developed a tumour when she was 5 in year 1.. she has and continues to astound us all with her bravery, courage and positivity! She really is an inspiration, as too is her family.  Caitlin is leaving Ackworth school at the end of this year to attend another secondary school – we simply wanted to do our last charity based around Caitlin’s experience."

The students and staff began their fundraising last October and came up with some fantastic money making ideas, including a doughnut sale, 'Wig Wednesday' and several collections at their nativity and carol service.

Their most recent venture has been the 'grow a pound' initiative, where by each child is given £1 and given the chance to become an entrepreneur,  using their imagination to make money.  The students used a whole range of ideas including being paid for being good, baking cakes and selling sweets.

In total the junior school have raised a total of £1,316.56 for BTRS.

Sorrell Coulson, our Evewnts and Fundraising visited the school to present their Achievement certificate and thank all the pupils for their support.  "The staff at Ackworth School have done a great job in educating the children about brain tumours, which can be a particularly difficult subject to discuss, and the children have done brilliantly in raising lots of money for BTRS! It was lovely to see how the school celebrated Caitlin's continued progression and wanted to support her by raising funds for a charity that had is close to her."
