Brain Tumour Research & Support across Yorkshire - Trustee Recruitment

Brain Tumour Research & Support across Yorkshire - Trustee Recruitment

Tue 24 January

Would you like to join the board of Yorkshire's leading brain tumour charity?
We have 4 Trustee Appointments at BTRS.

Founded in 2003 and originally named Andrea’s Gift, BTRS is Yorkshire and Humber’s leading brain tumour charity.  Offering practical, financial and emotional support to both adult and child brain tumour patients, together with their families and carers.
Brain Tumour occurrence is on the increase. Brain Tumours are now the most common killer of the under 40’s, including children, yet less than 1% of national research funding is allocated to this disease.

A regional charity, employing six staff members, with big ambitions, we have fundraised to develop a brain tumour research lab at the University of Leeds.  Combined funding of £750,000 with Candlelighters, a Leeds based children's cancer charity, saw the launch of the Translational Neuro-Oncology Group based at Leeds Institute of Cancer and Pathology in 2011.  There are now over 30 scientists investigating different aspects of research in Leeds, providing hope and information for brain tumour fighters in Yorkshire and beyond.

Our support services are growing, our successful adult support group model is being rolled out around Yorkshire, we are supporting more brain tumour patients with support grants.

Following a period of restructure, and having recently completed a review of our current board, we are seeking to recruit a number of new trustees to strengthen the skills-set of the existing board. New board members can expect to play a significant role in helping to deliver BTRS’s ambitions and to enable the charity to continue to grow and expand around the county.

Commitments and Expectations of a BTRS Trustee

As a minimum any person taking on the role of a BTRS trustee is expected to commit to the following on a voluntary basis.
·         3 Trustees Meetings per year. These meetings are Leeds based meetings taking place in February, June and November and will last from 6.00pm until 8.30pm.
·         2 Committee Meetings per year (if a trustee takes on the additional role as a committee member of medical, business or fundraising committee). These meetings will vary according to the committee but will last for 2.5 hours at a time to suit all committee members.
·         2 hours per month responding to correspondence from the Chair of the BTRS trustees in relation to the governance and structure of the charity.
·         1 half day trustees workshop. When required, this workshop will be Leeds based and will be held on a Saturday morning on a day to suit the board. The aim of this workshop is to ensure continued trustee development that will benefit BTRS’s development and growth.
·         There may be occasional additional extraordinary meetings and board phone calls, and some Board members will be required to work more intensively with staff on particular issues when time permits.
·         Trustees are also asked to support fund-raising activities.  Ways in which current trustees have done so include hosting or participating in fundraising events and activities, providing expertise, securing sponsorship and making donations. Appointments are unpaid and for three years in the first instance. Trustees may serve a maximum of three terms.

We are looking to recruit immediately:

·         One new trustee with a background in fund-raising or retail.
·         One new trustee with a background in marketing and communications.
·         Two new trustees with brain tumour patient experience.

We would like all of the above to have relevant and accessible personal or professional networks that trustees are happy to access for the benefit of the charity.

Previous experience of the charity or non-profit sectors would be an advantage, but is not essential.

If you would like to explore these opportunities further, please send a CV and a letter indicating how you feel you could contribute to Brain Tumour Research & Support across Yorkshire to Rachel Finlay, Charity Manager, at rachel@btrs.org.uk.

If you would like more information or an informal chat before applying, Rachel Finlay would be pleased to talk to you (0113 247 3766), as would Martin Gatenby, Chair of the Board – please arrange through Rachel.  You can do this either before or after making an application.
